Ocular Coherence Tomography

Ocular Coherence Tomography

Eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy are not only potentially sight threatening, they are also very difficult to detect.  Early symptoms are not always easy to identify with conventional eye examination methods such as fundus photography which can only take an image of the surface of the retina.

Reliably assessing the health of your eyes requires a more in-depth examination with advanced technology known as optical coherence tomography (OCT).  An OCT scan gives us a 3D image of the surface and underlying layers of the retina enabling our optometrist to see structures and warning signs which would otherwise remain invisible.

Detailed analysis software allows us to pick up on any suspect features and by comparing results from previous visits we can monitor and detect any subtle changes which may occur.

Common conditions identified through regular screening include:

  • Age related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular holes
  • Vitreous detachments
